It was such a huge shift in galactic policy that even if they didn't start using it immediately the difference between the galaxy before and post reformation would be so big that historians would definitely start using it just to make their work easier. The Ruusan reformation happened after a millennia of the galaxy being a meat grinder, a seminal point of the republic which had been a fixture of galactic power for millennia and would continue for several more. Palpatine could do so because he was the emperor and whoever disobeyed got zapped. The New Republic simply would not have the political capital to waste on such a frivolous thing. While it might be plausible for them to start using Yavin as the start of a new galaxy wide standardized time counting milestone at some point I doubt they would in universe start using it anywhere in the same century or maybe even millennia. the second year of this or that kings reign etc. Click to shrink.The reason we do that has a lot more to do with the church's convoluted policies and the industrial revolution because up to the fifteenth century a lot of states used Reginal years to tell time.
